Campbell University to revive football program in 08

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After more than a five-decade absence, Campbell University plans to once again field a varsity football program in 2008. The Fighting Camels will compete on the NCAA Division I-AA (non-scholarship) level. University President Dr. Jerry M. Wallace made the announcement Friday afternoon in a campus-wide gathering at Turner Auditorium. Fred Taylor, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and Bob Barker, Chairman of Executive Committee of Board of Trustees were also present at the announcement. “Throughout the years, a continuing request from students, alumni, and university friends has been to consider the return of football to the athletic program of the university,” said Dr. Wallace. “After a very careful feasibility study, which included faculty, students, alumni, trustees, and athletic staff, the trustees have approved the addition of football to Campbell’s athletic program. Therefore, I am delighted to announce the Fighting Camels will be back on the gridiron in the fall of 2008.”

Dynamic Duo prepare for conference

Junior Courtney Fuller and Sophomore Matt Daugherty prepare to put their undefeated events on the line next week at the Carolina Conference 1A championships that are to be held at Princeton High School on Wednesday. Courtney has been undefeated this year in the 110 and 300 hurdles. Matt has been undefeated in the 1600 and 3200 meter run. Courtney has had a phenomenal season and Matt is returning to his old form after a shoulder injury forced him out for a few weeks. We wish these athletes well and the team as well as they prepare for conference.

Charger men vs. North Johnston

The Charger men finished the regular season with a convincing win against North Johnston 110-32. The men swept all the events except for two. They kept in place their domination of the relays intact. Junior Courtney Fuller finished the regular season undefeated in the 110 and 300 hurdles. The team welcomed back Matt Daugherty from his serious injury. He was in his usual form and won the 800 meter run, 1600 meter run, and 32oo meter run by 1 second. Daniel Greene set a PR at the 100 by finishing with a blazing 10:89. Perseus Williams nosed out Daniel in the 200 with a 22:89. Jarvis Murphy ran for a first in the 400 barely inching out distance expert Jordan Cayton. Josh Crane won both the shot put and the high jump. Joshua Hunter won the discus. The men finished the regular season 7-2, 4-1 in conference for their best finish in years. The only two losses of the year were against 3A powerhouse Washington in a quad meet and against Rosewood. The team faced these teams twice and split the meets. They won head to head against Washington and won against Rosewood in the quad meet. The coaching staff, the administration and the student body is so proud of your accomplishments this year. Keep your focus as we head into conference, regional, and state competition.

Special thanks

A special thanks goes out to Coach Chip Cayton and Michael Metcalf for assisting the team this year with our timing. With all the home meets we have had it was difficult to get out enough people to help. This is the second year Mike has helped and Chip helped out on numerous occasions where we really needed and extra hand. Thanks so much guys. The athletes and the coaching staff really appreciated it.

Coaching spotlight

The coaching spotlight today is on Coach Teresa Danza. Teresa ran track for Ayden-Grifton High School for four years and capped her senior season off as one of our Co-Captains and led two of our relay teams into regional competition for the first time in years. Teresa is presently a student at East Carolina University as a pre-med major with a forensic science minor. Her long term goal is to be a doctor and we have no doubt that she will attain that goal. Teresa is assisting this year with the jumps and the hurdles. We appreciate her taking time out of her busy days to help us when she can.

Injury updates

A few weeks ago we had some huge setbacks on our team. Four of our team members have received significant injuries that have sidelined them for the season. Distance expert Trey Baggett had surgery last week on his arm and will be out for the remainder of the season. Matt Daugherty has a torn rotator cuff and is scheduled for surgery sometime this month. He was the fastest distance man in our conference and he PR'd this year with a 5 minute mile. Junior Laura Steinlein, our best jumper, just had surgery in her foot and will have surgery on the other later in the year. Sophomore speedster Rico Sutton is due to have surgery to correct an ankle injury that he received during football season. We miss all of these heavy hitters and wish them well.

Team Pictures

Lifetouch pictures will be at AGHS on April 27th at 4:15 p.m. to take our track pictures. I will pass out the flyers on the Monday after the break. Make sure you wear your uniform to practice on this day. You need to be there at 3:45. Coach Dufour

Special Thanks

A special thanks goes out to our Athletic Director Kathy Frazier. She does all the behind the scenes work for our team as well as the other teams at our school. We appreciate all of your help with scheduling our meets as well as coming to see how we are doing. We thank you for everything you do.

Coaching Spotlight

The coaches spotlight today is on Coach Brooke Lamken. This is Coach Lamken's second year assisting the team and she has been instrumental in getting our jumping program off the ground. Her favorite events are the triple jump, 200 meter dash and the 1600 meter relay. She has worked closely with regional qualifier Perseus Williams and Laura Steinlein to get them to where they needed to be as athletes. She is originally from Dixon, Illinois. She ran numerous events during her high school years to include the jumps and relays. She is a graduate of Clemson University where she received her BS in Psychology. She is presently attending East Carolina University where she is finishing her MS in School Psychology. She will be moving after the school year to Portsmouth Virginia to do her internship for that school system. We hope she will be coming back after next year to do her PhD work at ECU and assist when she can. Our team has grown quite fond of you Coach Lamken and you will be missed...Good luck to you in the future...

Impressive win for men's team

The AGHS men continue their hunt for their first ever conference championship. They faced conference rival North Duplin yesterday and won the meet by a score of 90-32. As in the past meets, AGHS dominated the relays winning every event. The men won all events except for one. Events that were first place are as follows. Marcus Moore 100 meter dash, Jordan Evans 1600 meter run, Jordan Cayton 400 meter dash, Jarvis Murphy 800 meter run, Daniel Greene 200 meter dash, Trey Baggett triple jump, Chris Dixon long jump, Josh Crane shotput(qualified for regionals), Discus Joshua Hunter, Courtney Fuller hurdles and high jump. Next the team faces conference foe Princeton next Thursday at home.

AGHS Ladies vs. North Duplin Ladies

The Charger ladies had a great day. Although their numbers are small due to participation and injuries, there were four women that contributed 34 points among themselves. Angelica Curry won the 100, 200, and 400 meter dash. Impressive...Felicia Pope won the long jump (1st time jumping ever) and the 800 meter run. Elisia Bell won the discus and came in second in the shotput. Brook Meeks was third in the 1600 meter run despite running with a painful injury. Great show of heart...This was a great day considering there were only four ladies competing. Awesome showing and we are so proud of your efforts.

Senior Spotlight

Today we recognize senior Fallon Speaker. This is her first year on the track team and she is working very hard. She is a member of the AGHS JROTC as well as numerous organizations within school. Fallon threw a career long 59 feet 7 inches last week in the discus which was good enough for third place out of many competitors. She is always motivated and willing to do anything the coaching staff asks. Fallon will be attending the University Of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the fall. Thanks for your dedication Fallon.

On the Track

On the track focuses today on statistician Chantel Hemby. Chantel has worked very hard at keeping both the ladies and the mens stats straight this year. She volunteered to do this after a back injury prevented her from competing. She is active in JROTC here at AGHS. We are so proud of your accomplishments and thank you for keeping our numbers straight.

On the Track

On the track focuses today on Jordan Cayton. Jordan runs the 400 meter dash, as well as most of our relays. A leader for our team, Jordan always puts his best foot forward when it comes to excelling in track. Jordan is very close to qualifying for regionals and should do well at conference this year. Great job and keep up the work.

NC Prep Track

I discovered today that Courtney Fuller is tied for 4th in the state for the high jump with his performance last week at DH Conley. His jump was 6'4" that day. There are only three other athletes in the state that have jumped higher. Huntley from E. Lincoln has jumped a 6'8" and Johnson from Ragsdale and Lovick from Garner have both jumped 6'6". There are 6 that have jumped as high as Courtney. His name was sent to NCPrepTrack today and should be posted sometime next week. It is important to look at this website from time to time to see where you match up against your fellow athletes. I also learned this week that Courtney Fuller was the recipient of a $1000.00 scholarship to attend Pitt Community College. Congratulations Courtney on all of your hard work.
