Flotrack-CU hill training with Wetmore

Spotlight College of the Month

Montreat College is our spotlight College of the Month. Nestled away on the outskirts of Black Mountain N.C., Montreat College is a Christian liberal arts college accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to offer master's, bachelor's, and associate's degrees. The main campus is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains fifteen miles east of Asheville, North Carolina, a region recognized as one of the most attractive living environments in the United States. Satellite campuses in Asheville, Charlotte, and other sites supplement the main campus. The College is committed to Christ-centered teaching and learning, and is a member of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities.
The Cross Country team and Track team is headed by Head Coach Jose Larios. He is in his second year at Montreat and is working very hard to take this program to the next level. He has had success recruiting local North Carolina athletes such as 1A standouts Elisabeth Elliot and Ben Hall from Polk County High School. I can see nothing holding this talented and young team back. We wish Coach Larios and his runners all the best this next year.

If you're interested in Montreat College contact me or check out the site for yourself.

Cross Country Camp 2008

Great job to Melanie Hamel and Chelsea Dufour for attending and successfully completing the Pitt County XC camp that was held in Black Mountain N.C. They got to do several long runs in as well as plenty of hiking. The highlight of the trip was going to Montreat College to run on their awesome course and to do their ropes course as well. Big kudos go out to Head XC and Track Coach Jose Larios for his hospitality. Our teams thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience that the Montreat College staff provided. Practice for all county XC teams begin today. Good luck in your quest for a great season. Coach D.

Murphy first A-G champ in more than a decade

GREENSBORO —

Ayden-Grifton's Jarvis Murphy showed up at the state 1-A track and field championships with no shortage of pressure or expectations.

After running the best 400-meter time at the regional a week earlier, Murphy went to North Carolina A&T with a championship-or-bust attitude.

He didn't disappoint.

Murphy improved on his regional time of 50.86 seconds — which was already the top time among 1-A athletes in the state — and scorched his way to Ayden-Grifton's first track championship since 1995 by running a 50.48 on Saturday.

"To be serious, I was nervous," Murphy said. "I knew it was my last race. I have been working hard for so long, and I just knew I had to win it."

Murphy also had a part in the Chargers' 4x400 state runner-up performance. Murphy, Justin Whitaker, Jordan Cayton and Matt Dougherty ran a time of 3:30 in the 1,600 meters to take second.

"My teammates, we've all just pushed one another," Murphy said. "Being at Ayden-Grifton, I can't tell you, it's been fun. Everybody's so close that it's like a family."

The A-G 4x800 team took sixth with a time of 8:33.55.

In the field events, Devoe Mewborn led the Chargers with his fourth-place finish in the discus (138 feet, 6 inches). Edward Wooten took sixth in the shot put (45-7 1/2).

"I just thought the team did phenomenal," A-G coach Jeff Dufour said. "It really was a special day, and it's been a special year."

Overall, the Chargers took sixth at the 1-A state championships. From the squad, Ayden-Grifton graduates 12 seniors.

Cayton will specialize in mid-distance events for the U.S. Military Academy track and field team.

Murphy wants to continue his track career, and is weighing offers from North Carolina-Wilmington and North Carolina Central.

"I want to thank my family and God for my opportunity," Murphy said. "I'm still thinking about it, but I'm leaning toward Central right now."

We are graduating 12 seniors and are excited about next years team and their possibilities. Both Zach Pipkin and Justin Whitaker will return next year to lead our Chargers forward again. Great job guys. A special thanks to Aaron Edwards and Tyler Pake for their persistence and efforts this year to assist and help our team become better athletes. Regional Champions again

Yesterday the AG track team had an early morning as they traveled to Princeton for the MidEast Regional Championship. The girls had a great day and came in fourth. Those ladies going to the state meet are Tiearra Johnson, Krystal Williams, Derrica Jones and Keonna Brown. The boys had their work cut out for them as newcomer teams North Carolina School of Science and Math and Raleigh Charter joined our region this year to make this meet one not to miss. NCSSM are the defending state track champions and we enjoyed meeting their athletes as well as RC's. The boys won the 4x400 and 4x800 meter relay as well as the discus. They placed well in numerous events. The boys repeated as regional champions and are looking forward to competing at the state meet next week at NC A & T.

Refuse to settle: Ayden-Grifton's Mewborn has championship hopes

The Daily Reflector

Thursday, April 24, 2008

For Ayden-Grifton's Devoe Mewborn, second place just isn't good enough. That's the idea he'll try to get across if you talk to him about his expectations for the Chargers' upcoming conference and regional championships.

Mewborn, who competes in the shot put and discus for the A-G track and field team, qualified for the East regional in both events in the Chargers' very first track meet this season.

He said it was something he wanted to get out of the way.

"I've qualified before, but you have to go and do it every year," said Mewborn, whose season-best distance in the discus is 141 feet, 10 inches. "I wanted to knock it out quick this year so I could just concentrate on my technique and work on my distance and not have to worry about qualifying or anything like that."

Mewborn has spent time with A-G assistant coaches Janarde Cannon and Aaron Edwards, who have each helped to fine tune Mewborn's technique.

"This season, I've actually surpassed what I thought," said Mewborn, who's tossed a 38-foot, 8 1/2-inch shot put this year. "I've been real consistent this year, unlike past years.

"Coach Cannon and Edwards have really improved my consistency, which has helped my distance. I've worked on my technique and my spin."

As any coach will say, hard work is contagious. A-G skipper Jeff Dufour likes that most about Mewborn.

"Devoe has made really, really big strides in everything he's done," he said. "He's really put forth a senior effort, which has had an effect on the team. He's over there doing his two events, but his leadership is evident everywhere."

That leadership, his coach said, starts with his desire for victory, which Mewborn summed up in one sentence on Wednesday.

"I plan on winning conference and regionals, and making a run at a state championship," he said.

Boys and Girls teams vs. North Johnston

Both teams did well today and are on top of the conference standings at 3-0. This is the best start for both teams in four years. More to follow tomorrow. Coach D.

Say a prayer for the Wainwright family

Most of you have just learned today of the tragic loss of Farmville Central student and athlete Justin Wainwright. I have coached track at Ayden-Grifton for four years and have developed a special relationship with a lot of the track and XC athletes at FC. Although I only knew Justin in passing through track and XC, my heart goes out to his family and his teammates. It is never easy to say goodbye to a fellow teammate and friend at such a young age. We will keep you in our prayers and know that God has a special place for you.

Run like there's no tomorrow

"Out of the silver heat mirage he ran. The sky burned, and under him the paving was a black mirror reflecting sun-fire. Sweat sprayed his skin with each foot strike so that he ran in a hot mist of his own creation. With each slap on the softened asphalt, his soles absorbed heat that rose through his arches and ankles and the stems of his shins. It was a carnival of pain, but he loved each stride because running distilled him to his essence and the heat hastened this distillation."
- James Tabor, from "The Runner," a short story

Good luck tomorrow

Pitt County Meet Results

NP, Rose take Pitt County championships

Sunday, March 16, 2008

The North Pitt boys and the J.H. Rose girls bested their Pitt County counterparts in a five-team track meet on Saturday.

The meet, only for Pitt County track teams, was focused more around camaraderie than competition, according to J.H. Rose boys' coach James Rankins.

"All the kids had a wonderful time," Rankins said. "This event is great for the whole area because this one is one where the kids all know each other. Most of the time they compete, they have to do or die. When the Pitt County teams all get together, it's more of a fun atmosphere."

In the boys' meet, the Panthers took the top spot with 135 points. J.H. Rose (111), Farmville Central (83), Ayden-Grifton (56) and South Central (26) rounded out the finishing order.

In the girls' meet, it was the Rampants winning with 133 points. Right behind them were South Central (108), North Pitt (59), Farmville Central (56) and Ayden-Grifton (42).

"They did well in the field events," said Rose girls' coach Dennis Gibson. "Victoria Roberson did well, she ran one of the fastest times in the state in the 300 hurdles (45.68 seconds). She high jumped today for the first time ever and did 5 feet."

Saturday's meet, held at J.H. Rose High School, didn't feature all of the events offered at most track meets. However, there was more of an emphasis put on the team-oriented relay events.

"I think the the kids really enjoyed doing more relay events than the open events," Gibson said.
